Green and historic status sought
By Karin Kapsidelis - Times-Dispatch

Green and historic status soughtJuly 16, 2008 - Run by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED -- which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design -- is a third-party certification program that sets benchmarks for environmental sustainability.

"This building has a lot of history to it," Richard Johnson, Wilton president and CEO, said of the site his company is providing for the University of Richmond's downtown campus.

The renovation will bring the building back to its "elegant level of splendor" from the 1950s, he said. The building, for example, has a plaster mural relief that reflects all things Virginia and "is absolutely stunning."

Johnson said the company will seek certification at the gold level of the LEED program.

Johnson is a UR trustee, but he said his company's decision to get involved in the project was an "independent coincidence."

"This is the ideal time to do this renovation."

The old Savings & Loan at 626 E. Broad St. is a significant downtown building, he said, and the satellite campus is "new twist for UR and what they're doing for the community."
